Bug-Byte

From what I've heard, this company was pretty big back in the early 80's, I think they held out until about 86, but I can't be sure. I think they had a lot of scuffles in management, in fact I think two of the people who founded Imagine games, the ill-fated company, walked out of BugByte just monthes before! I have a few of their games on original tapes, and there is an offer of a t-shirt with the BugByte logo on it - if you have one, I'd like a picture! :-)

Please contact me if you have any additional information about the company or its games!

Another shoot-em-up, and yes, this one is also very boring. It is just so unoriginal, and lacks all the pace which would make it fun. You have to shoot off the maurading aliens, they move down the screen, and when they get near to you, start twirling and spinning to try and get away, they also home in on you, making everything doubly hard. It is very tedious, and there are so many other good games for the beeb.

A mode 7 text adventure in which you are summoned to retrieve the Staff and Hourglass of Old Father time, and return them to him. Its quite playable, and would benefit from not being ALL IN CAPITALS but then again that was to save memory in them days!

This is a very playable game, probably one of my BugByte favourites! You have to protect the asteroids on the screen, which aliens try to steal, it is a bit like asteroids, only the rocks aren't moving. Even though it is only in mono, the effects are nice, especialy the explosions.

This is one of their best games, you play a robot, sort of a cross between R2D2 and a fridge, you have to destroy all the computers on the level, and then make your way to the exit. It is all played in a high-res black and white video mode, and it works well, because (for once) the graphics look nice, and actually add to the gameplay. The only flaw is the fact that you can't shoot upwards or downwards, on left or right, which makes it hard to defeat the aliens in some of the rooms.

Pretty darn fine sequel to a good first game, this has very nicely done graphics, still black and white, but nice and detailed. The game play may be just more of the same, and the same flaws remain, this is definitly worth playing, and even more so if you liked the first one!

Poor game this one, you are in charge of the Polaris submarine and have to sink a certain amount of ships, its very basic in the graphics and also very annoying because gameplay has to stop when something else is going on like planes attacking. Must have been a very early game.

This is a platform game, and it is actually quite good. You are a robot, and have to make it through the perils of a level filled with bad guys who shoot at you, and doors which move up and down, requiring sharp timing to intersect. This is quite enjoyable, and for some reason it always reminds me of the Robot from Short Circuit. The graphics are bad though, but at least the gameplay is there, which is lacking from so many of their other titles.

At last, a half decent shoot-em-up from Bug-Byte. In this one you drive a submarine around, and have to fight off the ships of the Sea Lord, who's territory you have just accidently stumbled into. It is at last played at the right speed, and the graphics are ok, if a bit confusing. At least this is worth a try, to see what the company is capable of.
